The Dheerga Sumangali Pooja is usually observed by ladies seeking blessings in their married life including the long life of their husbands. This is a very auspicious ritual which involves taking help from one's ancestors. The pooja is very sacred and it has stringent rules which need to be followed in order to attain results. The pooja bears results if it is performed on the Pradosham day, which means the 13th day after the new moon or the full moon. The day is considered to be very pious and hence holds it is regarded as rather significant. Ladies need to take a bath in til oil and wash their hair with Shikakai. After this they need to wear a special kind of saree known as madi-pudavai and then worship the lord. Diya's must be lighted and mantras must be chanted at least 108 times a day to praise and they should seek the blessings of the Goddess. The lingam of Shiva is also bathed with milk and water and chandan is applied to it. Kumkum is offered to Goddess Parvati and a set of Suhagana things are offered (such as a mirror, powder, sindoor and a comb) to help protect one's suhagna life. Then arti is sung and hyms are chanted. Women also observe fast on the day that they observe the pooja.
