^187:* Siva had foretold that Rama would obtain the aid of the monkeys for the destruction of Ravana, when the demon was travelling in the Himalayas. Siva appeared to him as a dwarf, and tried to prevent him from going along a certain road, Ravana disregarded the prohibition, and contemptuously asked who Siva was, to give an order that no one should pass that way; he also ridiculed the monkey-like appearance of the dwarf. Nandeshwara (Siva) replied that monkeys in appearance and power would be produced to destroy Ravana and his family. In order to show his power, Ravana raised the mountain in his arms; but Siva pressed it down with his toe, and crushed Ravana in his arms, until he cried out with pain; and not until he had propitiated Siva for a thousand years did he release him. When he released him, he said that his name should be Ravana, from the cry (Rava) which he uttered.
